Well, here I go again. Today’s words are about my paternal grandmother, Winnie Alice (Kaiser) Yearnd. In this photo she is sitting at the dining room table in her home at 703 E. Division, Cadillac. That is also the place my family lived from about 1958 until my parents divorced and I moved away to another town with my mother and brothers.
The photo brings back more than a few memories. There should be a hair net on that hair, but perhaps she took if off. There wouldn’t have been so many places at the table unless it was a holiday or special occasion.
Grandma seems to be sitting on the south side of the table, and we can see into the living room. I remember that chair with the scenes on it, and the crocheted doilies on the back of all the chairs. The door frame conceals a pocket door, they rolled out and could close the dining room off from the livingroom.
On the table and in the china cabinet you can see some beaded crystal glassware, which I remember drinking and eating from. The set included glasses and desert cups, and usually mother filled them with pudding. The beads ran around the bottom of the base of the pieces. D2 has the set now. For some reason my mother packed it up when she left before the divorce, and saved it for years. She gave the glassware to D2 when she married. I stored it for a while, and then delivered it when D2’s family bought their first house.
This picture was labeled Thanksgiving, 1957. You can see me, my second brother who would have been about two months old, and Sweetie. Thanksgiving in 1957 was November 28, just twelve days before Grandmother died on December 10, 1957. Her death certificate gives the cause as Coronary Thrombosis, a heart attack. She was seventy-two.
I have many other photos of Sweetie, but in these, she looks as I remember her.

Aren’t Grandmothers wonderful!! A sweet post! Love the old photos too.
Well, they are no older than I am. Funny, it didn’t seem like 55+ years….
I agree, Grandmothers are wonderful!
But more wonderful is being one!
(I know, I have 8 grandkids and LOVE it!)
Pam, I’m sorry to see you lost your Grandmother when you were so young.
My grandfather, Alf Kaiser, died when I was five, I missed him so much!!
From that time on grandma (Grace) lived with us (or in a Granny house behind ours). She was a very special lady and did most of the raising of us kids.
I never knew my paternal grandfather, he died before I was born. But again, I was fortunate to have ‘Grandmomie’ in my life. Both grandmother’s lived to be great-grandmothers to my 3 girls.
Pam, I don’t know how you manage to keep up with all the blogs and posting you do, you’re amazing! Keep up the good work!
Maybe I get so much done because I get up early? No. It’s because the “Belle’s Box” concept over on Granny’s Genealogy [www.warrenweb.info/genealogy] is easy and quick. I can easily do several ahead for when we are traveling. They will run out this summer, and I will be challenged much more. I used to think getting up early helped, but now I don’t.
As far as grandchildren go, we have five, and they certainly have enriched our lives.
Thanks for the comment, Kris. There will also be many more Kaiser posts when Belle’s Box runs it’s course.
