Darn It!
Funny, isn’t it, how things that have nothing to do with you become a part of you? I can illustrate with a little story.
When I married Papa I became part of a family with their own history, sayings, inside jokes, and other little quirks. A lot of these things are the illusive things that make us family; they arise from shared experiences.
The other day, I mentioned I had been darning a lot of socks lately, and sometimes even darning underwear. Now, I’ll bet none of you darn your socks do you? It is an almost lost art. I cannot imagine darning any of the underwear we have these days, but I suppose it was practical for the old woolen underwear worn my our farmer and logger ancestors.
I will never forget the first time I told Papa one of his socks had a hole, like these:

And he said, “Darn it”. I was thinking, what is he thinking? It turned out that when his family was faced with a situation like that illustrated above, the did this:

and said “DARN SOCK” at the same time.
Our dresser is pretty neat these day, since we have DARNED a great number of our socks and even some underwear. Pretty soon, we’ll have to hit the store, and how!
